Rhinoplasty is a plastic surgery procedure for reconstructing, correcting and improving one’s nose. Conditions which lead to this procedure involve birth defects, trauma, and/or people simply wanting to improve their appearance.
Rhinoplasty extends at least as far back to the ancient Egyptian civilization. Other cultures including ancient Indians and Romans also practiced surgical techniques to improve the appearance and function of the nose. These techniques were continually refined through the European Middle Ages, and continue to be improved up into the present time.
Types of rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty can be broken down into two subcategories – open rhinoplasty and closed rhinoplasty. Open rhinoplasty involves the surgeon making an incision in the patient’s septum on the exterior of the nose. Contrasted with this is close rhinoplasty, in which the surgical incisions and procedures occur with in the nose.
Nonsurgical rhinoplasty is an emerging area in which injectable fillers such as collagen are injected into the nose to alter it’s appearance without surgery.
Common areas addressed by rhinoplasty Common areas addressed by rhinoplasty involve congenital abnormalities such as a cleft palate, environmental damage such as physical trauma to the nose, burns or infections to the nose. The most common areas addressed however involve the aesthetic improvement of the nose, designed to improve the patient’s appearance.
Risks associated with rhinoplasty
The main risks involve temporary swelling and bruising around the nose and eyes. Other difficulties can include bleeding, skin infections, and occasionally complications associated with the anesthesia.
It is important to consider that the results or rhinoplasty are fairly permanent, and the changes can be quite significant. It is recommended that the patient’s expectations are realistic, and that they are psychologically prepared for such a change in appearance.
It should be noted rhinoplasty is not recommended for people who have body dysmorphic disorders, or are physically still developing, such as teenagers.
Typical rhinoplasty procedures most often cost a patient in the range of $5000 to $10,000, and depend on the type and scope of procedure used. Depending on one’s insurance policy, sometimes all or part of the costs of these procedures are covered. Other times they are not and need to be paid for “out of pocket” by the patient.
Costs of rhinoplasty in San Francisco may vary compared to other regions of the world.
